Compean and Ramos commuted

So Bush finally got around to addressing the two border guards who shot a drug dealer in 2005.  They were serving prison time because the prosecutor claimed they had no reason to shoot the guy and no reason to even chase him.  Pertinent details include the fact that when they attempted to stop the guy for suspicious driving, he hauled ass, and when he couldn't haul ass anymore, he bailed from the van and ran.

Again, when the cops say stop, STOP!!  If you aren't doing anything wrong, you'll probably get to go pretty quickly.  If you don't, you'll probably get paid.  Sorry folks, this is the cost of living in a society which employs professional officers to enforce the law.  Don't like it? Move to the mountains of Canada.

And before I even get any crap about the officers "tampering with the scene and trying to cover it up" by picking up some spent brass, ask why they felt like they had to in the first place?  Probably because they knew that they would be strung up for trying to do their jobs and then protect themselves.  I'm sorry, but I have a lot of trouble agreeing with anyone who says that a) law enforcement officers should let bad guys or suspected bad guys get away when they run from said officers, or b) that officers of the law should incur ANY unnecessary risk while performing their jobs.  They have families to go home to as well, and frankly, if you don't want to get shot, don't run.  Even murderers don't usually get shot by the police when they stop and assume the position.

Given the way that I feel about it, I'm disappointed that he only commuted the sentances and didn't grant full pardons.  I'm happy that they get to go home, though.
