Well, on the way to work the other day, I forgot my Zune and was stuck listening to early morning radio tunes which always suck, and in my flipping through the stations, came across Dr. Pinkus selling his miracle cure. It kinda made me sick to hear all the things he said it would cure. Amazingly, I can't find half of them on the website, where he could be held accountable for making claims. Ridiculous claims aside, the science of his arguments confounded me considering that he is a trained doctor.
Most notably, he jested that the RDA for certain vitamins was ridiculously low, and recommending ingesting 2, 3 or even more times as much of certain vitamins as recommended. While I understand that those are the minimum requirements for an average, healthy Joe, the "good doctor" didn't mention it at all, and assumed that we are all superhuman athletes in need of way more nutrition than the average guy. In other words, MY advice is CONSULT YOUR OWN DOCTOR about whether or not those recommendations are right for you. HIS advice is "screw it, just take my magic pills, I'm a doctor." While it's also true that too much of certain vitamins, notably those that are fat-soluble and "storable" by your body in fat tissue where too much of it can become toxic, I'm really hoping that he only has included the water soluble vitamins in his concoction so you can pee the extra out, like you probably already are, and at worst only waste some money and dissapoint yourself.
Another facet of the advertisement that really urked me was the lack of conclusive results by way of a peer reviewed intervention-type double blind study. As a trained medical professional he must OBVIOUSLY understand the importance of such studies, yet all he could offer for efficacy of his pills was some anecdotes. Worse, they aren't even people any of us would know, and given the claims he was already making, it wouldn't be difficult for me to believe if I were told that even the people were made up, never mind paid off.
All in all, I believe in good nutrition and diet constructed around it with the help or advice of a professional doctor or nutritionist; someone who has studied and been educated on what works in the real world with solid evidence that proves it. This guy is just selling snake oil.
